In 1996, Big D and Bubba met in Baton Rouge, La., at WXCT-FM where Big D was hosting a morning show and Bubba was hosting afternoons. They immediately hit it off, both on and off the air, and ended up hosting a show together. The radio duo was hired by cross-town rival WYNK-FM in 1999 and they began self-syndicating The Big D and Bubba Show that same year. In 2003, they moved to WSIX-FM in Nashville, Tenn., so they could broadcast from Music Row and get better access to the Country music industry. And in 2005, Big D and Bubba joined Premiere Radio Networks’ lineup of nationally syndicated talent. Big D started in radio when he was 14 years old at a 1000-watt Christian radio station in Cookeville, Tenn. By the age of 17, he hosted his first talk show on that station, which led him to doing mornings on WKXD-FM, an oldies station in the same city. His first country radio experience was at KIDX-FM in Billings, Mont., where he fell in love with the country lifestyle. The Montana Broadcasters Association named his program “Best Morning Show in the State of Montana,” and the Heart of Billings Magazine deemed the show “Best New Morning Show.” He met his wife in Billings and then moved to Baton Rouge to do mornings at WXCT-FM. In his hometown of Houma, La., Bubba became a disc jockey at the local country music radio station. He went on to travel the world and worked at Top 40 music stations in places such as Guam and Tokyo. While working in those cities, he was able to travel to parts of Asia, Australia, and the South Pacific. Eventually, he got homesick and returned to the U.S. He did Top 40 radio in Saginaw and Detroit, Mich., and then El Paso, Texas. He also had radio stints in various formats in Reno, Nev., Miami, Fla., New Orleans, La., and finally Baton Rouge, where he not only met Big D, but also his wife Stacey. The Big D and Bubba Show was originally made popular by their homespun local approach and “candid phone calls.” Requests from fans poured in for copies of the humorous calls. Among those fans were comedians, entertainers, and country music artists. The morning duo established friendships with many of these fans, including country music’s biggest names like Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, George Strait, Keith Urban, and Gretchen Wilson, all of whom have been on the show to do interviews and live performances. The Big D and Bubba Show can now be heard from 5-9 a.m. on 96.1 The Wolf!
